Eduroam (which stands for Educational Roaming) is a wireless worldwide infrastructure that allows mobility among its connected institutions.
It consists of a single space that interconnects multiple institutions. It’s based on a common usage policy, as well as technical and functional requirements, that it allows inter-institutional roaming.
Being part of eduroam allows users visiting another institution connected to eduroam to log on to the WLAN using the same credentials (username and password) the user would use if he were at his home institution.
Eduroam.es is an initiative included in the RedIRIS project that coordinates organizational initiatives in order to offer a single space for mobility in Spain.
As from February 2007, the WLAN of the University of Balearic Islands (from now on UIB) belongs to the international initiative eduroam. The eduroam network at the UIB is designated to users that are not members of the UIB but belong to some institution joined to the project.
The following sections describe the connection process to the eduroam network. Two different situations are considered: the eduroam UIB’s network (roaming users from another institution) and the connection to another institution’s network (UIB’s members of the UIB that visit another institution).
Users from the UIB visiting another institution
Eduroam allows users visiting another institution to log on to the WLAN using the same credential (username and password), as they would use if they were at their home institution.
There are two steps that must be followed before visiting another institution:
- Verify if the institution that will be visited is joined to the eduroam project (http://www.eduroam.org, can be used to know the institutions that are connected to eduroam).
- Find out which connection method is available at the visited institution and the way to set it up (this information can also be found at http://www.eduroam.org).
Users from another institution visiting the UIB
Users visiting the UIB, and coming from another institution connected to eduroam, can log on to the UIB’s WLAN (network identity, or SSID, “eduroam”) if they are within an eduroam network area.
The access to the network is controlled by the IEEE 802.1x standard. Your home institution must have published on its website all the necessary information about the authentication process at this network.
The eduroam network is offered to roaming users that come from another institution and are temporarily visiting the UIB. It offers Internet access and other public services such as: HTTP, HTTPS, DNS, FTP, SSH and TELNET.
Members of the UIB that are visiting another institution and face technical issues to access the eduroam network can contact the “Centro de Atención de Usuarios de Red.es”. This center is also responsible for users visiting the UIB. Centro de Atención de Usuarios de Red.es
